yields of the Cell microprocessor for the Playstation 3 are not good. A process mole tells us that the Cell yields are far enough below par that the amounts of good dies off the test wafers are "horrible". The problem is that IBM and Sony designed the chip for some very aggressive process technologies that did not materialise in the way the fab boys were expecting. Because of this, we are told Sony is scrambling to get yields up before it has to make them for real, a fast approaching deadline.
Will it get it done? Who knows. Will it be able to make enough to satisfy initial demand? Not a chance. Then again, in consoles, what else is new?
Not only does this mean less PS3's available it means the production costs are going to go through the roof over what was previously estimated.....

eh, I doubt it will affect them that much....even if its for real. I've heard a lot of companies that "leak" information out like that...to boost demand and such....then when it comes out, bam, its a flood of money coming in (Though they dont make any money selling the consoles....but the accessories that go with it go far and above the cost of that console lol)

from what Best Buy has been told....$400 and $500 ( or maybe its $300 and $400...but no more than the previous)....but things can change by the time its actually released.....I know $400 is at least one of them, because the hype is that you can get a $1200 blue ray player for $400 lol

wrong euclidean sony themselves has said $500-$700....so unless bestbuy is gonna sell them at a loss too someone there has no idea what they are talking about.....
now problem 1 with your first statement.....Sony already has more demand than they can handle
2 this came from IBM not Sony.....IBM does not want the Cell processor to sound hard to fab because that scares computer manufacturers into believing IBM wont be able to keep up with demand if they did switch to cell so they will continue to stick with Intel

ok...well then maybe Best Buy is going to...But I know $400 is what they have stated...not just an employee...it was in a newsletter about it to the stores (Insider info, not something publicly announced). $400 will be the base system, $500 is the upgrade system, I asked today just to make sure. and if you would post links to where you find these stories/statements...I would have known it was IBM not Sony .....your first post was kinda missleading me...thats why I said it like that: yields of the Cell microprocessor for the Playstation 3 are not good. A process mole tells us that the Cell yields are far enough below par that the amounts of good dies off the test wafers are "horrible". The problem is that IBM and Sony designed the chip for some very aggressive process technologies that did not materialise in the way the fab boys were expecting. Because of this, we are told Sony is scrambling to get yields up before it has to make them for real, a fast approaching deadline. we are told Sony is scrambling to get yields up before it has to make them for real, a fast approaching deadline.that bolded statement tells me its Sony not IBM...see what i mean? lol.

How does that tell you it is Sony…..the way it is worded implies it is a 3rd party disclosing the fact that Sony is trying to get yields up…..I can not believe you are surprised by this…..they have to throw out so many chips now with current technologies because of imperfections….it is no surprise that the problem is even more widespread in the Cell’s……
Nvidia and ATI often gets bad chips (in fact this is part of the reason ATI had shortages on the X800…..they jumped ahead too much without upgrading fabrication plants so chip yields were poor)…..in fact a lot of the chips in their slower cards are chips that were made for lets say 7800 GTX’s but just can not cut it so they lower the clocks to where the chip will work or cut off the bad pipes with a laser and then load them into a 7600….Cell’s currently only have one application and that is the PS3 and in the PS3 they need the full capability of the processor so 10 years down the road some peoples PS3’s don’t lag like a mofo because Sony down clocked it to make sure it ran (although that is still a possibility since we all know Sony is not pro-consumer) but because of that all Sony can do is scrap them and make no money on them…..

well I know about chips not meeting standards...its just the way you worded it it sounded like it was sony...though now thinking about it sony doesnt make the chips anyways...I must have been tired and not looked into it very much...but if you would have said IBM in the first place...that probably would have caught my eye haha.....o and ya...with the chips....I read this article on anandtech about cpu's....when they make them...the really really bad ones get thrown out...the avg ones get sent in as the main cpu they were building...and the high end ones are either the different core name (winchester, venice, warhammer, etc..) or they're the FX ones....it makes sense...the reason they'd have the problem is because these are pretty much new...they dont have different model #'s and such since they're all suppose to be the same lol

IDK if you really wanted one to sell for $$ then order one from Japan before they are introduced in the US thats what one of my friends did with the PSP and with its multi language support its really no different than my english version.

Post by euclidean© on May 11, 2006 21:10:05 GMT -5
ya i could....Ive got 3 things I could do 1. order it from Japan.... 2. Buy a bunch of pre-orders...then sell them to other people 3. Buy one and sell it on Ebay like the guy that did it with the 360... with #3 i could make a lot...but I think Im guaranteed a profit...i mean most of the 360's that were sold were around the $1000 mark....and 1 i remember getting to 6K+....so eh...who knows...you'll have to wait and see when it happens

I remember most of them being $600-$800 for the 360 with a few rare extraordinary morons hitting $1,000+
Sony is only gonna have 2-4 million for a world wide launch.....I would not get a PS3 to keep but if you wanna resell on ebay you could make a couple hundred.....

so does that mean your camping out at meijer for 2 or 3 days like everyone else? LOL i enjoy laughing at people like that because in all acuality if you camped out for 48hrs to make $1200 then if you calculated it youd be making only $25 an hour and thats if you get that much out of it but if you sell for $1200 and subtract the $600 you paid then you would only be making $600 and for 48hrs thats only $12.50 an hour and most people make that much at their normal jobs so is it really that economical to make money that way? sometimes you just got to wonder. LOL

well, I would be camping out at Best Buy for one....2 it would only be from midnight on wed/thurs to the doors opening thurs/fri at midnight...so in all it would actually be 24hrs...and then calculate the fact that I would probably sell it for at least $1200(knowing that there will be less than expected) and make $548. which comes out to $22.83/hr....and to me...for doing nothing but buying and selling it...that would have been a great profit...not to mention that I dont make any money right now so thats a lot for me lol

yeah I would watch out....if you try and just film inside a best buy store they detain you and call the cops and call you a terrorist......I seen about some comedians who were doing stuff in a best buy and the people screwing around never got in trouble but when they seen the camera in the bag they went nuts saying you can not film the inside of a best buy since 9/11 it is illegal......
it is just insane how psychotic best buy is.....
